North Canton Hoover Athletic Hall of Fame

Hoover High School athletic council has established the North Canton Hoover Athletic Hall Of Fame to recognize outstanding athletes, coaches, teams and individuals who have contributed significantly to the athletic program. Through this recognition, it is hoped that our tradition will be enhanced and others will be motivated to excellence.
 Meet the 2016 Athletic Hall of Fame:

Dave Clegg (Posthumous widow Judy accepting): Mr. Clegg attended Akron North High School and The University of Akron. After spending 23 years at Alliance High School teaching and coaching, Coach Clegg spent 9 years coaching boys track and the cross country teams at Hoover High School as well as assisting with the swimming teams. Mr. Clegg coached 2 State Championship Track teams along with 10 Individual State Champions. Coach Clegg was inducted into the State Track and Cross Country Hall
of Fame. In 2002, coach lost his battle with cancer but his legacy lives on and he is remembered each year by the cross country Invitational that bears his name.

Charles Cropley: Charles is a 1966 graduate of Hoover High School. He was a 4-year wrestling and 3- year cross country letterman. Cropley was undefeated during the regular season of wrestling in both his junior and senior years at Hoover High. He was a member of the 1965 State Championship Team and was a 3 year NC Holiday Tournament Champion. Cropley was also a proud member of the Bowling Green
State University Wrestling Team and received numerous awards throughout his career.

Holly Goodpasture Collins: Holly is a 1992 Hoover High School graduate. She was a 4-year softball and 3-year basketball letter winner. In addition to her career pitching record of 89-14, she led her team to a Federal League Championship all four years. She still holds Hoover pitching records for most batters faced in a season and in a career. Holly continued her softball career as a 4-year member of the Kent State University Softball team. Holly has been a Lake Local Schools teacher for 19 years.

Sharon Goodpasture O’Donnell: Sharon is a 1987 graduate from Hoover High School. She was a 4- year softball and a 2-year basketball letter winner. She held a career pitching record of 76-17 during her time at Hoover. Sharon went on to be a 4-year member of the University of Akron’s Softball program. Sharon has been a teacher for 24-year at Canton City Schools.

Charlie Grandjean: Charlie was a 1976 graduate from Hoover High School. He was a 3-year football and a 3-year basketball team letterman. Charlie was also a 1-year member of the baseball & tennis teams. Charlie’s college football career began at the US Naval Academy where he earned 1 letter before transferring to Kent State University where he lettered in football. After college Charlie played professional football from 1982-1984. Charlie now owns RTM Technologies.

Dick Gross: Mr. Gross is a graduate of Green HS and Mount Union College. Coach Gross served the Athletic Department in several capacities including being the head track coach, assistant football coach, and boys & girls’ basketball coach at Hoover High School. Mr. Gross, who spent 36-years as a math teacher and a loyal and dedicated coach, contributed to numerous Federal League titles.

George Hamilton: George is a 1949 NOCA High graduate. He was a 2-year basketball and 3-year baseball letterman. After high school George continued his basketball career at Kent State University where he was a varsity letterman and captain of the 1953-54 team. George graduated from Kent State University in 1954 before embarking on a 36 year career at the Hoover Company.

CJ Mears: CJ is a 1982 graduate from Hoover High School and a 3-year wrestling letter winner. He was State Champ in 1982 following a 3rd place finish in 1981. Following his successful high school career, CJ went on to Lehigh University where he was a 3 year letter winner and a two-time NCAA national tournament qualifier. Currently CJ is a Software Consultant.

Bill Ridge: Bill is a 1958 NOCA High School graduate who lettered 3 years in both football and basketball. Bill continued his athletic success at Baldwin Wallace College where he was a 4-year letterman in both football and track. Following his college years, Bill played 5 years of professional football and remains active in athletics today serving as an official. He is retired from Alliance Community Hospital.

Karen Theis: Karen is a 1982 graduate of Hoover High School and lettered in volleyball,basketball,track & softball for 3 consecutive years in high school (Grades 10-12). She was the basketball scoring leader all 3 years and the first Lady Vike to score more than 1,000 career points. Karen’s basketball jersey was retired after her senior year and she received a full scholarship at Miami of Ohio. Karen lettered all 4 years that she played at Miami of Ohio. Karen is a 20-year teacher & coach in Florida.

 

Nominations are accepted for each new class through January 31 of that year. Each new class will be announced at a home football game in the fall.
